            Garland was planning to hit the trail again going to Montana, as part of a six-month break
             from writing.  He was accompanied by Burton Babcock who had traveled with him to the
             Yukon in 1898.  Garland planned to cover 1,200 miles of the wildest parts of the Rocky
            Mountains on  horseback with a pack train of six horses.  Garland said that arduous
            exercise "cleans the mind. and refreshes the spirit."

            Garland had received permission from the warden at the Colorado State Prison at Canyon
             City to be locked inside a cell at the prison for a brief time so he could develop an impression
            of what it was like to be imprisoned.  His attempt to get local color, however, extended to
             several hours as the warden forgot Garland was locked up with a felon who chided him
            asking, "What the _____ are you in for?  When are they going to stretch your neck?"
