            Garland's home at La Crosse, Wisconsin, caught fire as their housekeeper, Fern Fox, was
            preparing breakfast and a gasoline stove in the kitchen exploded.  Fox was badly burned. 
            Mrs. Garland grabbed the children and exited the house, but Garland was trapped in a
            bedroom on the second floor.  He was compelled to jump to safety on the ground through
             a window.  The family escaped without injury, but a number of Garlands' collections
            which included valuable Indian rugs and baskets from Arizona were damaged.  None
            of his manuscripts was lost to the fire that did $2,000 damage to the house.
